Appropriately the reverse design depicts the Royal coat of Arms whose origin can be traced back many centuries. There is an inscription on the edge of the coin “Decus et Tutamen” which is a Latin motto which may be translated as ‘an ornament and a safeguard’. This inscription first appeared in 1662 when thicker; machine struck coins superseded the hammered coinage of former centuries. In the years to come special designs will be used to represent England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
